An Automotive Electronics Technician specializes in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining electronic systems and components in vehicles. This person will work with advanced automotive technologies, including VCUs, infotainment systems, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and electric vehicle (EV) systems. They ensure vehicles operate efficiently and safely by troubleshooting complex electrical and electronic issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnosis and Repair : Use diagnostic tools (e.g., scan tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes) to identify issues in vehicle electronic systems, such as wiring, sensors, control modules, and communication networks (e.g., CAN bus).
  • System Installation and Upgrades : Install, configure, and calibrate electronic components, including navigation systems, entertainment systems, backup cameras, and ADAS features.
  • Maintenance and Testing : Perform routine maintenance, software updates, and functional tests on electronic systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Troubleshooting : Analyze and resolve issues in complex systems like hybrid/electric vehicle batteries, charging systems, and autonomous driving technologies.
  • Documentation : Record diagnostic findings, repairs, and maintenance procedures accurately for service records and warranty purposes.
  • Customer Interaction : Communicate with customers to explain technical issues, repair processes, and maintenance recommendations clearly.
  • Safety and Compliance : Adhere to safety protocols, industry standards, and manufacturer guidelines when handling high-voltage systems and sensitive electronics.
  • Collaboration : Work with other technicians, service advisors, and parts departments to ensure efficient workflow and accurate repairs.
  • Continuous Learning : Stay updated on emerging automotive technologies, such as electric vehicles, autonomous systems, and connectivity features, through training and certifications.

Qualifications

  • Education : High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an automotive technology program or vocational training in automotive electronics preferred.
  • Certifications : ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6) or Advanced Engine Performance (L1) highly desirable. Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Tesla, GM, Ford) are a plus.
  • Experience : 2-5 years of experience in automotive repair, with a focus on electronics or electrical systems. Experience with EVs or hybrid vehicles is advantageous.

  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and software.
  • Strong understanding of automotive electrical systems, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills for complex troubleshooting.
  • Attention to detail and precision in repairs.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • Physical Requirements : Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and stand for extended periods.
  • Tools : Familiarity with specialized tools like multimeters, oscilloscopes, and manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment.
